Russia hits Ukrainian train shortly after Boris Johnson and top European officials leave station

A tense atmosphere gripped the Ukraine-Poland border this week after a Russian drone struck a train engine in Yahodyn, just moments after several high-profile Western dignitaries had departed the area. Among those traveling through the station were former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and various top European security advisors returning from the Yalta European Strategy conference in Kyiv. While no casualties were reported thanks to a timely evacuation ordered fifteen minutes before the impact, Ukrainian rail officials suggested the strike may have actually been intended for the diplomatic train carrying the visiting officials.

The narrow escape has sparked sharp condemnation from those involved and international observers alike. Former CIA chief David Petraeus, who was stationed at Yahodyn on another train during the attack, described the experience as terrifying and called it the act of a barbaric leader aiming to terrorize civilians. Similarly, Boris Johnson took to social media to question the warped logic behind blowing up a stationary locomotive so close to the Polish border, using the incident to urge Western allies to accelerate the delivery of critical air defense systems to Ukraine.

For regional leaders, the proximity of the strike is particularly alarming. The drone hit roughly two kilometers from Polish territory, prompting Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk to hold an emergency meeting regarding Russian escalation near his country’s borders. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha characterized the move as Putin knocking directly on the doors of NATO and the EU, arguing that such aggression must be met with sanctions that make the cost of war unacceptable for Moscow.

This incident fits into a broader and increasingly dangerous pattern of Russian strikes targeting Ukraine’s vital railway infrastructure. With air travel suspended since 2022, trains serve as a lifeline for millions of citizens and essential military logistics. Recent weeks have seen deadly attacks on passenger trains and depots across northern and southern Ukraine, fueling fears that Russia is intentionally expanding its target list to include civilian transit hubs regardless of who is on board.
