Mississippi gov trolls Lane Kiffin, LSU after Ole Miss defeats Tigers in coach’s return to Oxford

September 21, 2026 2 min read

Governor Tate Reeves decided to have the final say on Saturday night after Ole Miss secured a gritty 32-24 victory over LSU in a matchup defined by high tension and deep history. The game marked Lane Kiffin’s highly anticipated return to Oxford, where he was greeted not with open arms, but with a chorus of boos and middle fingers from the home crowd at Vaught Hemingway Stadium. While the atmosphere remained electric throughout the contest, it was the Governor who turned the aftermath into a viral moment on social media.

Taking to X following the whistle, Reeves took a direct swipe at LSU’s massive financial investments in their program. He questioned what exactly a fifty four million dollar buyout for a former coach, a ninety one million dollar contract for a new one, and a fifty million dollar roster actually buy, concluding that all that money simply bought them an ass whipping in Oxford, Mississippi. The jab served as a sharp punctuation mark to a week filled with trash talk surrounding Kiffin’s departure from Ole Miss to lead the Tigers.

On the field, the game lived up to its emotional billing. After falling behind, LSU mounted a fierce comeback in the third quarter and managed to tie the game early in the fourth with a field goal. However, Rebels quarterback Trinidad Chambliss proved to be the difference maker, sealing the win with a fourteen yard touchdown run and a successful two point conversion with just over six minutes remaining. Chambliss admitted after the game that while he has played many matches in his collegiate career, this particular victory felt different because of how high the stakes and emotions had soared leading up to kickoff.

Despite the hostile reception and the political roasting from state leadership, Coach Kiffin maintained a reflective tone in his postgame comments. He acknowledged that he is human despite his public persona and expressed gratitude for the people in Oxford who supported him during difficult periods of his life. With this victory, Ole Miss is now positioned to leapfrog LSU in the upcoming AP poll, moving past their rivals who entered the weekend ranked seventh while they sat at eighth.
