Elif Eralp: A leftist leader with Turkish roots dubbed ‘Germany’s Mamdani’

September 22, 2026 3 min read

Elif Eralp’s journey toward the potential leadership of Berlin began decades ago in a family garage, where she spent her childhood painting environmental posters alongside friends. Born in Munich to Turkish socialists and trade unionists fleeing the 1980 military coup in Turkiye, Eralp grew up immersed in activism and political demonstrations. Now, thirty five years later, those early experiences have culminated in a historic electoral victory. Her party, Die Linke, secured first place in Berlin’s state elections, positioning her to possibly become the city’s next governing mayor. If successful, she will break multiple barriers as the first person of Turkish descent and the first woman of color to hold the office since German reunification.

The victory comes at a time of deep polarization in Germany, serving as a sharp contrast to recent gains made by the far right Alternative for Germany party elsewhere in the country. While the AfD found success in regions like Saxony Anhalt, they finished third in Berlin, suggesting that voters in the capital are craving a different kind of disruption. Experts note that Eralp represents a colorful and open version of Germany that stands in direct opposition to nationalist rhetoric. By focusing on tangible urban struggles such as rent controls and affordable housing, Eralp has tapped into a widespread desire for radical political change among Berliners.

Much of Eralp’s momentum can be attributed to her modern approach to campaigning, which has earned her the nickname Germany’s Mamdani. Drawing inspiration from New York City politician Zohran Mamdani, Eralp utilized high energy social media content and professional vibe branding to reach millions of viewers online. This strategy allowed her to translate complex democratic socialist ideals into relatable messages about working class struggles and social injustice. Members of her own party even traveled to New York to study Mamdani’s tactics, hoping to replicate his success in fighting neoliberal policies within their own city limits.

Beyond the numbers and trends, Eralp envisions transforming Berlin into what she calls a solidarity city. With a background as a lawyer and experience with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, she aims to dismantle stigmatizing police checks and increase political inclusion for migrants and refugees. From proposing municipal ownership of housing to planning New Year receptions for the homeless at city hall, her agenda is rooted in inclusivity. For many observers, her ascent is more than just a political win; it is a symbolic moment that confirms Berlin’s identity as a diverse metropolis where residents from all backgrounds can see themselves reflected in the halls of power.
