MLB fans explode as fishy images of Sonny Gray’s neck raise eyebrows after Red Sox get trounced

October 2, 2026 2 min read

The Boston Red Sox have once again found themselves staring down a miserable early postseason exit, but the heartbreak of their latest loss to the New York Yankees is being overshadowed by a strange controversy involving starter Sonny Gray. While the team struggles to reclaim the glory of its championship eras, fans have shifted their focus from the scoreboard to high resolution photographs of Gray’s neck. Social media exploded after images surfaced showing a mysterious substance seemingly caked onto the back of the pitcher’s neck during the later stages of his Game 2 appearance.

Accusations of cheating quickly flooded the internet, with many onlookers claiming the residue was pine tar used to gain an unfair advantage on the mound. The fire was further stoked when Jomboy, a popular media entity with deep ties to Yankees fandom, released a detailed video suggesting that Gray was utilizing sticky stuff. This digital firestorm comes at a particularly sour moment for an organization already reeling from being trounced on national television for two consecutive nights in one of baseball’s most bitter rivalries.

However, some observers argue that these allegations lack necessary context. Supporters of Gray point out that he has maintained similar habits throughout the entire season and that the supposed residue only became visible toward the end of his outing. There is also the question of motive; as a thirty six year old veteran who has hinted at retirement, it seems unlikely that Gray would risk his legacy and reputation in what could be among his final major league appearances, especially given how strictly pitchers are screened today.

Despite the noise online, official channels remained quiet following the game. Umpires did not flag any issues during the contest and Gray avoided addressing the speculation during his postgame press conference. Whether it was actually banned substances or simply sweat and grime from a high pressure game remains unclear, but for Red Sox fans, it serves as yet another frustrating footnote to a disappointing October collapse.
