Flydubai co-pilot ‘assaulted’ captain before landing: Initial Saudi probe

A harrowing midair struggle between two pilots has sparked international investigations after a Flydubai flight was forced to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. According to a preliminary probe by the Saudi Interior Ministry, the captain of flight FZ1073 was assaulted by his own co-pilot during a trip from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The confrontation resulted in injuries to both men and created a critical safety risk for the 174 passengers and eight crew members on board.

The aircraft eventually touched down safely at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk, where ground teams provided immediate medical care. While most passengers were transferred to a replacement aircraft to continue their journey, the two pilots remained in Saudi Arabia for treatment. After being medically cleared, they were escorted back to the United Arab Emirates on Thursday morning by an Emirati security team.

The identity of the injured captain has been revealed as Smit Machchhar, an Indian national whose actions during the crisis have earned him widespread acclaim. Despite sustaining serious injuries during the attack, Machchhar managed to maintain control of the vessel and ensure a safe diversion. This bravery did not go unnoticed, with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly hailing him as a hero for showing unwavering resolve to protect hundreds of lives in the face of grave danger.

As the physical aftermath subsides, legal and security proceedings are ramping up. The UAE Attorney General has launched a formal investigation into the motive behind the assault, specifically examining whether there was any prior planning or links to terrorist activity. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s National Transport Safety Center continues to coordinate with regional authorities to gather evidence and determine exactly what triggered the violence in the cockpit.
