A Symbol of Struggle: How One Woman’s Eviction Shook the Foundations of Spanish Politics

October 9, 2026 2 min read

The death of Maria Carmen Abascal, known affectionately as Maricarmen, has transformed a local housing dispute into a national crisis in Spain. The 87 year old woman passed away on Wednesday, just hours before she was scheduled to sign a new rental agreement that would have returned her to the apartment she had called home for seven decades. Her passing comes after a traumatic forced eviction in September, during which she was carried out of her residence on a stretcher by authorities after a private investment firm aggressively raised her rent.

For many in Madrid and Barcelona, Maricarmen did not simply die of old age or illness, but of heartbreak. Protesters gathered outside the Madrid parliament shouting accusations of murder, claiming that the cruelty of losing her sanctuary stripped away her will to live. Those who knew her described a vibrant woman full of energy who withered rapidly once she was removed from her home. To these activists, she became a martyr for thousands of others facing similar pressures from vulture funds and corporate landlords who buy rent controlled properties specifically to displace elderly tenants.

Even from her hospital bed in the days leading up to her death, Maricarmen urged the public to remain brave and continue fighting for fair housing laws. She hoped her ordeal would inspire legislation to prevent other vulnerable citizens from suffering the same fate. This plea resonated deeply across the country, sparking mass mobilizations and street encampments as citizens demanded an end to predatory evictions and better protections for renters.

The political fallout has been swift and severe. Following the public outcry surrounding Maricarmen’s case, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed his condolences and took drastic action against his own legislature. After lawmakers refused to pass an emergency housing bill featuring an eviction moratorium, Sanchez dissolved the Spanish parliament on Monday and called for snap elections on November 29th. What began as one woman’s fight for her front door has ultimately triggered a governmental collapse and a nationwide referendum on the right to shelter.
