How was the Flydubai pilot who attacked his co-pilot cleared to fly?

October 5, 2026 2 min read

The aviation world is grappling with urgent questions regarding security and psychological vetting after a terrifying struggle broke out in the cockpit of a Flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv. In a scene resembling a thriller, the aircraft plummeted from 33,000 feet to 17,000 feet in just one minute as the co-pilot allegedly stabbed the captain and attempted to crash the plane. Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian national described as a hero by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, managed to open the cockpit door despite his injuries, allowing passengers and crew to rush in and overpower the attacker. The aircraft was eventually brought down safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

As investigators from the United Arab Emirates work to determine if the act was premeditated or linked to terrorism, many are asking how someone capable of such violence passed the rigorous screens required to command a commercial jet. Under the regulations of the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority, pilots must undergo extensive medical evaluations covering both physical and mental health, alongside strict security and financial checks. However, experts suggest these screenings offer only a snapshot of a person’s state of mind at one specific moment and cannot always predict future behavioral breakdowns or hidden motives that manifest once in the air.

Details regarding the suspect remain scarce. While he has been taken into custody by Saudi authorities, his citizenship and full employment history have not been officially confirmed beyond reports that he joined Flydubai less than a year ago. This lack of transparency has fueled tensions between Israel and the UAE over pilot eligibility laws. Some Israeli officials claim that agreements mandate only pilots from nations with diplomatic ties to Israel should fly into their airspace, though these assertions remain unverified.

In response to the breach, Israel has announced plans to significantly tighten its own arrival protocols. Rather than relying solely on carrier certifications, officials say they will now implement independent security checks on all pilots entering the country to identify potential risks before wheels touch down. For now, while the passengers were safely retrieved by a rescue flight, the industry remains haunted by the realization that even the most stringent vetting processes can sometimes fail to detect a lethal threat sitting right next to the controls.
