Kara Swisher: “No,” AI Industry can’t regulate itself

September 15, 2026 2 min read

Veteran tech journalist Kara Swisher has issued a blunt warning regarding the future of artificial intelligence, arguing that the industry cannot be trusted to police its own behavior. During a recent appearance on CNN with Kaitlan Collins, Swisher dismissed the notion of self-regulation as completely ridiculous, suggesting that leaving safety and ethics in the hands of the corporations profiting from the technology is a recipe for disaster.

Swisher took her critique further by calling for significant legal accountability for those developing these powerful tools. She argued that AI firms should face criminal liability for their products, moving beyond simple fines or guidelines toward a system where executives are held personally responsible when their software causes genuine harm. This stance marks a sharp departure from the current trend of voluntary commitments made by major tech players.

The conversation comes at a time of deep political division over how to handle the rapid ascent of generative AI. While some lawmakers continue to call for meetings with tech leaders to discuss responsibility, others have gone so far as to label concerns about AI risks as hoaxes. By pushing for criminal penalties, Swisher is advocating for a regulatory framework with actual teeth rather than one based on corporate goodwill.
